The Dark Tower - Stephen King

OK, so it's not on my lists below but it had to be read

And well worth the wait it was.
He's a bit cavalier with his heroes (or is he?) and the "Deus Ex Machina" gag was quite a twist but it did manage to awaken the feel of the original four books which the latter two (The Wolves of Calla & Song of Susannah) seemed to miss. In fact those two had the impression of padding: just to make up the number of volumes - he said 7 so he was going to make 7. They were even printed on thicker paper & in larger font just to make sure they took up the right amount of space on the shelf - shame on you Stevie ! ;-)

I'm not sure how long ago I first started the series but the whole feel of the story & narrative matched what I was looking for at the time and I was feeling that after that much of a gap I'd not feel the same way. Sort of, I was right in that but it didnt spoil the enjoyment. Sure I did approach the latter two with a sort of feeling of "duty" and of getting the job done but the final one (I'm assuming) did the job right.

And when he warns you not to read the really final chapter, take heed. Tho you won't take any notice anyway.
And like me, you'll probably wonder why you chose to, after all . . .

I'm going to miss them

The ones I meant

So here are the books I meant before I thought about it:
Title Author Read
1984 George Orwell Y
A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANEY John Irving Y
A TOWN LIKE ALICE Nevil Shute
ANIMAL FARM George Orwell Y
BRAVE NEW WORLD Aldous Huxley Y
BRIDESHEAD REVISITED Evelyn Waugh
CATCH-22 Joseph Heller Y
DUNE Frank Herbert Y
GONE WITH THE WIND Margaret Mitchell
LORD OF THE FLIES William Golding Y
ON THE ROAD Jack Kerouac
THE CATCHER IN THE RYE JD Salinger
THE GRAPES OF WRATH John Steinbeck
THE GREAT GATSBY F Scott Fitzgerald
THE LORD OF THE RINGS J.R.R. Tolkien Y
THE MAGUS John Fowles Y
THE STAND Stephen King Y
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Harper Lee Y
WATERSHIP DOWN Richard Adams

- which leaves me only 7 to get through - hardly I challenge so I'll stick with my original (or second original) list of choices.
So long as I'm allowed to leave out most of Terry Pratchett's output. Why so many of his? All on the BBC list I'm sad to say. I expect it's more a reflection of the type of people who fill in surveys rather than his true worth.
And I suppose the same can be said for the U.S selection of Robert Heinlein - tho havng read him I'd say is more suited to being on this list than our own T.P.

Booklist

So, in the 1C1 in 1K1 list, #90 is: "Read all books common to BBC's Good Read & Random House's list" - which, I realise now, I'm not going to do as I've filtered the lists the wrong way & included ALL books from both lists - I've just removed the duplications instead of selected just those (D'Uh!). Pillock!

So now I've got 247 books (I used the Board list & the Reader's list from RH) instead of 53 . . .
Luckily, I've read some of them already.
